Organizing home gym
Updated: Dec 26, 2023
#1 Designate Specific Zones:
Clearly define different areas for specific sports or activities. For example, allocate a corner for weightlifting, a section for basketball, another for ping pong, and so on.
At the beginning, we had a Weight Bench (my husband's legacy from bachelor times) and a Treadmill. However, when our son turned 16, it wasn't enough, so we decided to upgrade to a more complex bench.
#2 Storage Solutions:
Invest in storage solutions like shelves, bins, and cabinets to keep sports equipment organized. Consider labeled containers for smaller items like balls, gloves, or protective gear.
Opt for furniture that can serve dual purposes. For instance, a storage bench can be used to store equipment and also serve as a seating area.
#3 Wall Organization:
Utilize wall space for storage. Install hooks, racks, or pegboards to hang equipment such as rackets, bats, or even gym bags. This not only saves space but also keeps things easily accessible.
Also, if your gym is in the basement like ours, with a low ceiling, you need to pay attention to the gear installed on the walls. For example, the use of a pull-up bar could be restricted if the ceiling is too low. My son has improvised the exercises to be able to use the bar.
Also, we had to switch from the traditional jumping rope to a Cordless Jump Rope to avoid touching the ceiling.
The low ceiling might force you to choose a Boxing Machine on the wall instead of the much-desired Boxing sac.
Playing basketball, they all experienced back pains, and we were recommended exercises at a wall bar and TRX.
#4 Flooring Considerations:
Choose durable and easy-to-clean flooring, especially in the gym area. Rubber mats or interlocking foam tiles can protect the floor from heavy equipment and make cleaning up easier.
#5 Other tips:
Establish a daily or weekly cleanup routine with the whole family. This ensures that equipment is put back in its designated place and the area stays organized.
Consider rotating equipment based on the season or the interests of the teens. This prevents overcrowding and allows for a change in the setup without accumulating too much gear.
Develop a schedule for using the different areas to avoid conflicts. This can help in ensuring that everyone gets their fair share of time in the home sports area.
Periodically go through the equipment and declutter. Donate or sell items that are no longer needed or have been outgrown. This helps in keeping the space clutter-free.
Make the sports area visually appealing by incorporating colors and decorations related to the different sports. This can motivate the teens and make the space more enjoyable. They just love the new mirror.
Ensure that safety measures are in place, especially in the gym area. This includes proper storage of weights, securing heavy equipment, and having a first aid kit on hand.
